Chara, the London born and raised, upcoming singer-songwriter talks about the importance of mindfulness and self-care methods, along with outlining his future plans...
When listening to Chara’s soon to be released single – ‘I’m praying’, I was struck by his unique style and how it fuses jazz to hip hop. “I’ve always loved listening to classics like Etta James, Otis Redding and Stevie Wonder. When I first started music, I was predominantly inspired by these “old school singers”. Later on in life, I really started to get into R&B like Jhene Aiko. She is a significant influence of mine and has a real impact on my music. She does this cool thing with Tibetan bowls which like blows my mind. And it’s this sort of thing that I’m trying to achieve in my music. I think it’s more important than ever to focus on self-care. For example, I find myself downing a lot of herbal tea – like I’ve become a herbal tea addict recently. I love all sorts; cranberry, lemon and ginger and green tea. I just love it; it just makes me feel amazing.”
In a time where the world is a stressful place, Chara is focusing on mental health more than ever, and mindfulness is important. But what is mindfulness? Well, according to the people over at mindful.org, “Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us”. “Surprisingly, it is very easy to achieve”, Chara states. “For example, I love nature. Recently, I’ve been taking a lot of walks to the woods, listening to meditation music just trying to let good of any bad energy, trying to connect with what’s around me. I definitely feel like self-care and mindfulness impacts my music. Let’s say I’m writing a song about self-worth, I go back to that relaxed feeling in the woods and try put this into my music. I hope that people listening to my music will get that same feeling.”
So what can we expect from Chara in the future? “Well, I’m definitely releasing music as soon as the world calms down a bit. Right now, I’m just using this time as an inspiration period and writing as much as possible so that as soon as the studios open again I can release as soon as possible”. Chara also outlines his longtime plan to me; “In the next five years, I’d like to see myself as a successful singer-songwriter. Someone that has their mind on track, which is very inspirational. I also aim to have at least two singles and an EP out. I also see myself helping others, and I hope that my music will be able to help people too.”
